Batch compressing images

I didn’t think recompressing a few hundred images was going to be so annoying.

First I tried the Photoshop batch processing, but found it a bit difficult.

The image quality field didn’t seem to do anything to my output. Maybe a couple of KB difference, but I need something that would compress a 23Kb image down to somewhere around the 1Kb mark. Using Photoshop&aspo;s “Image Processor” I managed to bulk compress the images from 23Kb to 21Kb.

Three possiblities exist, either:

  • 1. I was doing something wrong
  • 2. Photoshop doesn’t like me.
  • 3. The Image Processor is more mediocre then a beige jacket

After some searching, I came across IrfanView

IfranView is a free (Non-commercial use. Its about $17AUD to register for business use) image viewer where you can crop, resize, edit and add effects to images.

Batch compressing images is fairly easy.

In the file menu there is a easy to sport “Batch Conversion” option.

Once we click that, a dialog appears. First we choose our output format, I’ve gone with JPG.

Beside this, click on “Options”. Another dialog will appear where we set the quality.

Now we have these options set, we need to choose which images to process.

On the right theres is a file browser.

Select the images you wish to convert, and then in the window in the bottow right, you need to click “Add”. This will queue those files for conversion. We can add other images as needed and it will add them to the queue.

One more setting, you may need to change the output directory, on the left hand side, change “Output directory for results files” to some easy to find place on your harddrive.

Click “Start Batch” in the bottom left, and away it goes.

Easy, and works well.
