eGames 2008
PC Games to play included Farcry 2, Red Alert 3, Call of Duty, and Day of Defeat. Farcry 2 multiplayer was fun, although gameplay seemed a bit sluggush compared to COD4. The drivable vehicles are always a blast, but seem to attract a large amount of bullets.
Call of Duty 4 was at the Intel stage, where you could battle against 9 others and a player from Team Immunity. Team Immunity represtented Australia at the WCG 2008. I managed to score a spot on the stage, and was owned several times by the immunity player. Ended up coming in 4th place.
I wanted to play Red Alert 3, but it seemed matches were taking a while, so skipped that.
Nintendo had a large area set aside to the Wii. They were showing Disaster : Day of Crisis, Animal Crossing and Wii Music. It seemed there game machines wern’t being used much. Last year there was large queues to play games, but this year it was mostly the attendants playing. Is the public losing interest in the casual appeal of the Wii and looking for something with more meat?
The Nintendo presentation held was fairly boring this year. Animal Crossing and Wii Music don’t particularly grip me too much. The previous years showing Zelda and Metroid were much more exciting to watch. It doesn’t help that the fire alarms go off in the middle of the presentation either. Watch below on how Nintendo fans ignore the fire alarm for the free goodies.
In comparision the Sony and Microsoft areas were populer. I had a look at Mirrors Edge, although it looks nice, the game play is a bit confusing. Often you’d find yourself a bit disoriented, which is possible because of the sameness of the buildings. (Or maybe is just me being lame).
The freebies this year on entry included:
Two Lanyards (I think I have about 20 game themed ones now. They seem to love giving them away). A Playstation Mag, the Saturday Age, Spore Creature Creator, Anime Update and a few pamplets. Not really a huge haul. As always there are giveways thrown from the main stage, but you need to be quick. I’ve scored a free tshirt in the past, but failed this year.
Checking some of the other exhibitors, there were some nice geek merchandise available, including a large section devoted to remote control helicopters. Gears Of War full size Lancers were a hot (but expensive) item. There were also retro consoles available, although they seemed overpriced (Game gear for $80, Atari for $100).
Compared to last years, I think it was quieter. The games on show were better then last years, although Nintendo seeminly didn’t bring anything to tempt the more hardcore gamers.
