Painting the Balrog – Completed

From last time the wings were still painted with the white base colour.

The wings were painted yellow over the top. After this was dry, a watered down red was washed over the top. The watered down red sat in the hollows of the wings, but still left some of the yellow to show through.

The wings were then carefully painted with black, making sure to leave some areas unpainted – so the red/yellow shows. This gives the impression of an outer black skin covering a layer of fire/lava.

The model was then drybrushed with codex grey.

I left the whip till last, as painted around it would be troublesome.

The whip is 6 ply wire, that is normally twisted. I untwisted a section of the wire, and cut of some of the strands off to have 3 strands twisted into a core.

The wire was bent to look whip like. The twisted section of the wire was covered with putty, so that it wouldn’t look like woven wire when painted.

It was given a coat of Foundation Paints – which have a high pigmentation, and then a coat of white.

The red and yellow was blended in, and the whip was finished.

To attach the whip to the model, I drilled a hole into the fist of the Balrog. I recommend a hand drill, a power drill will definately make a mess of things.

The model was attached to the base, with some sand added to fill in any gaps around the feet. (Which was then painted black to look like ash/charcoal)

The finished model turned out quite well, but took a bit longer to complete then I thought.
